10. Billie Eilish (2022)
This was Billie Eilish’s second Met Gala carpet — and we think she killed it. The star wore a custom Gucci gown designed by Alessandro Michele. This year’s theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” and the dress code was “Gilded Glamour.” She played into the “Gilded Glamour” theme from the corset to the bustle and the dress was entirely up-cycled since she wanted an eco-friendly approach, which is pulled off incredibly well.
9. Kate Moss (2009)
This has to be one of the most talked about looks, as well as best-fitting themes for her. The theme of the night was “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion” which symbolizes exactly who Kate is. She walked arm in arm with designer Marc Jacobs and wore a gold metallic mini dress and matching head wrap. She stunned in this simple but beautiful outfit — and was undoubtedly the talk of the town.
8. Ariana Grande (2018)
This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Ariana stunned in this custom Vera Wang gown with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel screen printed all over. It was the star’s first Met Gala, and we think she absolutely nailed the theme. The look was much discussed online, mostly praising the former children’s TV star as the best look of the Met that year.
7. Kim Kardashian (2019)
You could almost see everyone’s jaw drop when they saw Kim Kardashian walk on the carpet. Thierry Mugler came out of retirement just to design this for Kim, which reportedly took 8 months to execute. She wowed the crowd with the dripping-wet latex look, sleek hair, and a clear sandal. The theme that night was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” This look was definitely one of the most talked about, from the attention to detail to the waist on Kim.
6. Amber Valetta (2004)
Amber was one of the biggest supermodels in the ’90s, working for nearly every major designer. But she was also the one who started the trend of everyone dressing on theme. That year’s theme was “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion And Furniture in the 18th Century.” She walked the carpet in a Maggie Norris corset and John Galliano skirt. Amber referenced the theme perfectly — and looked great doing it!
5. Cher (1974)
Cher is nothing short of an icon. Of course, she is always known for her music — but she is just as well-known for her style. She attended the 1974 Met Gala with designer Bob Mackie. The theme of the night was “Romanic and Glamorous Hollywood Design.” Cher amazed the crowd in her sheer and feathered dress. Nothing similar had been done at the time, and this night was where the “naked dress” was born. Nowadays celebrities everywhere wear similar “naked dresses” — but Cher was the original. Still to this day, people will reference this look on Halloween.
4. Naomi Campbell (1995)
When you think of top fashion icons, you think of Naomi Campbell. The theme of the 1995 Met Gala was “Haute Couture.” — and nobody no one does that better than Naomi. She stunned in a shimmering silver Versace dress hand in hand with Gianni Versace himself. To this day people still reference this iconic look. Naomi will just always be that girl.
3. Sarah Jessica Parker (2018)
Sara Jessica Parker never disappoints, and this night was no exception. This year’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The actress wowed in a golden embroidered gown designed by Dolce and Gabbana. Her long detailed train glided up the carpet each step she took. The star also wore a golden jeweled headpiece which included a nativity scene. SJP just always knows how to deliver a theme.
2. Blake Lively (2022)
Blake Lively just knows how to turn heads — especially since she was one of the nights hosts. Again, this year’s theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” and the dress code was “Gilded Glamour.” When she entered she wore this metallic rose gold gown designed by Versace, but as she walked up the stairs she took off the bow on the skirt and gloves to show a light blue train and blue gloves. Her look was inspired by New York City’s architecture, specifically the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, and Statue of Liberty.
1. Rihanna (2015)
Frankly, Rihanna is the greatest when it comes to the Met. Time and time again she proves why she is the Queen Bee. The theme this year was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” She strutted the red carpet in a yellow embodied fur-trimmed cape, headdress, and a sparkly silver pump. This dress was designed by Guo Pei, not only was it handmade but it took 2 years to make. Everyone oooed and awed over Rihanna and to this date she is considered the best dressed when it comes to the Met Gala (and in everyday life).
