10. Doja Cat (2024)

The theme this year was “Sleeping Beauty: Reawakening Fashion” with the dress code “Garden of Time.” Doja Cat showed up in a towel and wet t-shirt dress (by Vetements) with a smeared mascara makeup look. She left The Mark Hotel in a towel, platforms, and a head towel. But once she hit The Met carpet she was wearing a drenched long wet t-shirt dress. We’re still scratching our heads wondering how this is on theme — or if it’s really considered fashion.
9. Polly Mellen (1989)

Although known as a legend in the fashion industry, that doesn’t always mean you get it right. This year’s theme was “The Age of Napoleon: Costume from Revolution to Empire” and Polly appeared in what looks like an 80s ill-fitted mini dress. We’re not sure how her look relates to the theme, but we were expecting just a little more from Polly, considering her illustrious fashion background.
8. Taylor Swift (2016)

There is no questioning that Taylor Swift is a pop sensation and is perhaps one of the biggest celebrity names today. Sadly, she isn’t quite known for her fashion. This year’s theme was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” and Taylor strutted the carpet in a metallic Louis Vuitton dress. The look was a let-down overall. We think she could’ve taken more risk with the theme — but the bleach-blonde hair was a nice touch regardless.
7. Kim Kardashian (2021)

Sometimes, you don’t always save the best for last. Kim was one of the last people to walk the carpet on this night of the Met in 2021, and she showed up in a black t-shirt dress designed by Balenciaga. The dress not only had a trail but also covered her face completely. Although we could see that it was during the COVID-19 pandemic and mask usage was more prominent — the choice of the face mask left us baffled. While masks may prevent COVID-19, this mask didn’t prevent us from scratching our heads.
6. Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney (1999)

Interestingly, Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney walked the carpet in Hanes tees that they bought the morning of the event. They got them customized to say “Rock Royalty” — since the theme that year was “Rock Style.” Although it was fitting and a funny moment on the carpet, they also came extremely underdressed and have even admitted in past interviews that it wasn’t appropriate to come dressed like that. However, we all learn from our past mistakes, and this was no exception.
5. Hillary Clinton (2001)

Hillary Clinton wowed the carpet in a leopard print gown — and not in a good way! The theme this year was Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years. Jacqueline Kennedy was always known for her chic, sophisticated, and classic style — and this was far from it. The leopard was an extreme choice for such an occasion and stood out for all the wrong reasons. This definitely landed her on the worst-dressed list.
4. Ashley Park (2022)

The theme this year was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” and we’re unsure how this look ties into it. There’s definitely a lot going on in this look — from the hot pink to the feathers to the pink bow in the back — and the chartreuse shoes. We think that if she stuck with one of those it could’ve been a solid look. However, all of it together left us feeling overwhelmed, which is why she ultimately had to land on the worst-dressed list.
3. Katy Perry (2019)

This year Katy Perry showed up on the carpet as a chandelier and, yes, later turned into a cheeseburger. Although the theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and her looks were definitely “Camp” — as this one may have been over the top. It ultimately just didn’t show much fashion to us, it was showing how over-the-top you could be — and that’s not the point of The Met Gala.
2. Kim Kardashian (2013)

This look became a viral sensation. Kim’s look was turned into couch memes all over the internet, and you can still find them today when you Google this look. This year’s theme was “Punk: Chaos To Couture” — and she was definitely not dressed to the theme (who thinks of floral when you hear the word ‘punk’?) In past interviews, she admitted that there were two versions of the dress: one in the floral pattern, and a simple black one. Although she preferred the black one, the designer convinced her that the floral one would be better. Maybe Kim should’ve just trusted her gut on this one.
1. Kim Petras (2021)

Coming in at number 1 as worst dressed at the Met Gala in history is Kim Petras. This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and she said she was channeling her and America’s inner-horse girl, but if we’re going with the horse theme, it’s a “nay” from us. If anything, she should have worn it for the 2019 Met Gala “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” — perhaps a more fitting theme for this look. The long hair was a nice touch to her dress, but overall, we felt she was simply trying too hard to be quirky.
